OBJECTIVE:

To help parents — especially fathers — recognize and respond to their baby's hunger cues confidently, reducing stress around feeding and encouraging responsive, nurturing care.

Why It Matters:

Babies can't tell you they’re hungry with words — but they do communicate in other powerful ways. Learning how to read their signals can help you:

  • Feed your baby before they begin crying from hunger

  • Create a calmer feeding experience for both you and your baby

  • Strengthen trust and attachment through responsive care

  • Reduce the chances of overfeeding or underfeeding

  • Gain confidence in your role as an involved, attentive father

3 Types of Hunger Cues:

1. Early Hunger Cues (The Sweet Spot)

These are the easiest and most ideal times to start feeding:

  • Smacking or licking lips

  • Opening and closing mouth

  • Turning head toward your chest or bottle (called “rooting”)

  • Sucking on hands, fingers, or clothes

💡 Dad Tip: If you notice these cues, start feeding. Waiting too long can lead to frustration for your baby and yourself.

2. Active Hunger or Mid Cues

These happen when baby’s hunger is growing more urgent:

  • Fussing or mild whimpering

  • More intense rooting or head-turning

  • Trying to position themselves to feed

💡 Dad Tip: Stay calm and begin feeding soon. If you're bottle-feeding, make sure everything is prepped in advance for a smooth transition.

3. Late Hunger Cues

These are signs that your baby is very hungry and becoming distressed:

  • Crying loudly

  • Turning red, flailing arms or legs

  • Arching back or pushing away

💡 Dad Tip: Try to calm your baby first with skin-to-skin contact, gentle rocking, or soothing sounds. Once they’re calm, offer the bottle or breast.

How to Respond with Confidence:

  • Stay prepared: Keep feeding supplies clean and within reach.

  • Track patterns: Notice when your baby tends to get hungry. Is it every 2–3 hours? Right after a nap?

  • Stay calm: Your baby can feel your energy. Staying relaxed helps you both.

  • Work as a team: If you’re co-parenting, share notes and cues with your partner.
